We'd like to thank all of you who participated in our Word of the Year event, where we invited our clients to share a word that is inspirational, meaningful, or a focal point for 2023.

It was so inspiring to see the different words for 2023 and to read the goals and stories behind them. So many of you shared your Word of the Year that we decided not to just draw one name, but to surprise everyone who participated with a little keepsake to bring you into this new year. Unsure about the Vacant Unit Tax declaration? Here's our understanding:

To the best of the team's knowledge, residential property owners must submit an occupancy declaration by March 16, 2023 to avoid penalty.

If you do not submit the declaration on time, you will be subject to a $250 late fee. Late declarations are accepted until April 30, 2023, after which a 1% tax rate of your properties' assessed value (as determined by MPAC) will be added to your final tax bill in June.

If you forget to declare, make a mistake, or disagree with the outcome of an audit you will have the opportunity to complete a notice of complaint until September 15, 2023.

Visit ottawa.ca/vut to complete your declaration, and learn more about the framework, enforcement and penalties.

Before you begin, make sure you have a copy of your property tax bill on hand! You will need the roll number and the access code to complete your declaration.
